Learn to Skate/Play

Greater Lowell Youth Skating Association (GLYSA) runs a "Learn to Skate/Play" program for aspiring young hockey players to get onto the ice and learn basics of skating, stopping, and using a hockey stick. Previous skating experience is not necessary, your child will learn to skate and progress into hockey drills with a stick and puck.

GLYSA offers 2 separate registration programs for the Learn to Skate/Play Program:

  • Full Season = 24 Weeks of instructional learn to skate and play hockey - The cost of the Full Season is $300 and is due prior to your child's 1st practice.
  • Individual Session = 6 Weeks of instructional learn to skate and play hockey - The cost of the Each Session is $75 and is due prior to your child's 1st practice. 

Ages

Learn to Skate/Play is appropriate for players ages 4-12 if they have not played organized hockey before.

When

The first session begins late September and runs for 6 weeks, 3 additional 6 week sessions run through early March.

Where

Practices are held at the Janas Rink in Lowell, MA.

Practices

The Learn to Skate/Play program practices weekly at 10:00am on Saturdays.

EQUIPMENT

Players will need at a minimum: skates, a hockey helmet with cage, gloves and a stick.

Recommended equipment: shin pads, elbow pads, hockey pants, chest protector.

Jerseys

Players are provided a practice jersey on their first day of practice.
